Creating healthy habits – Part 2

I know a lot of you reading this know how to eat healthy, but a lot of people don’t.
Take my dad for example. I was talking about how expensive avocados are in Australia and he said ”What is an avocado? Is that the brown/green thing with the big seed in the middle.”
I thought it was funny that he barely knew what an avocado is, but I can bet you that he is not the only one.
My dad eats cucumber and tomatoes, at his best. And that was what I was brought up with.

I’m studying nutrition and I find it really hard to eat enough fruit and veggies everyday for example, cause I don’t know how/when to eat them. I just end up snacking on carrots throughout the day, not lot of variety if I may say so myself.

Some people probably know that they should eat healthier, but they don’t. Why is that? Are we afraid of trying something new? Are we too lazy to actually make an effort to make healthier food? And to be honest, some people actually seem scared of a nice looking salad instead of fries.

So today I want to talk about fruit and veggies.
Both fruit and veggies are fantastic sources of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, which is needed for an optimal health. The Australian Dietary guidelines suggests that you should eat 2 to 5 – at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of veggies everyday. This increases the chance of maintaining a healthy weight and may decreases the risk for chronic disease, such as cancer.
It is also important to eat a Variety of this goodness to get all vitamins and minerals that the body needs. So no, snacking on a bag of carrots everyday is just gonna turn me orange.
Some studies also show that eating vegetables and fruit with your meals increases your satiety, especially if they are high in dietary fibre.

I just want to say to you: – Just the smallest step towards a healthier lifestyle is enough, and it is also important – for you current and future health.
Maybe start by adding spinach to your lunch and dinner, as this contains iron and magnesium. And it is easy to eat, at least for me.
Or why not make a fresh salad with spinach, tomatoes, kidney beans and some melon. – This is something I like, mixing fruit into my salads. Also add some pumpkin seeds to give your salad some crunch and additional protein.
It might not be a lot of an add/change, but remember – a small step to your healthier life. Also, creating a healthy sustainable lifestyle will in the long run promote a better well-being.

Creating healthy habits – Part 1

I would say that I’m a pretty healthy person. I take good care of my body, inside-out.
I see a personal trainer once a week, I see an osteopath after the accident, I ride my bike everywhere (but still haven’t been up on that horse since the accident), I do yoga, and I spend my time with people that have the kind of energy I want to surround myself with.
But one of my favorite healthy habits is the Sunday markets. This is truly one of my happy places.
There I get all my fruit and veggies for the week. Organic, cheap, and I am supporting local farmers – which I love.
But it’s not just that, it is also the atmosphere.
I go there every week with two friends of mine that happens to be psychologist students – so of course this is my therapeutic time for the week – a lot of talk, love, laughs and hugs.
I also get to be part of a community where people recognize me, and sometimes give me bargin’ deals on fruit. Come on, is there anything better?
And of course – cuddles with all the cute dog (my favorite!).

It is not just about eating healthy and being active, but also create habits that stick – like going to the farmers markets. Your fruit and veggie intake will probably increase by just looking at all of this delicious food from mother earth, smelling, tasting. Trying new healthy foods that you might end up loving!

I know that back home, in Sweden, farmers markets might not be a thing where you live which makes this harder. And to be honest, I hate going to the grocery store. So to make this easy for you all – move to Australia.

You also get incredible spoiled with all of these fresh, amazing fruit and veggies!

By giving to someone else you are giving to yourself

Last month I started doing volunteer work for Meals on Wheels in Coolum and I am loving it!
When I came home on Monday after a couple of hours in a car visiting cute elderly people (with even cuter dogs!!) I was in so much pain in my neck, but I was in such a happy state of mind because I gave something to someone else – food, a talk, some cuddles with a dog. It was absolutely a lovely feeling.

I spoke to my aunt a couple of weeks ago and I asked her what she wanted to do now when she had retired, and she said she might wanted to volunteer at an animal rescue but she seemed a little bit too insecure to actually understand that she can do it! Organisations are always looking for more people to help out – animals, op-shops, Meals on Wheels, mentors. And if you have the option to go overseas to do volunteer work, do it! You get so much from giving to someone else.

I watched this Ted talk the other day that really inspired me to do give a helping hand to the society.
Earlier this week I was going to my friend’s place, a walk for about 15 minutes, and I decided to pick up trash along the way. So I walked on one side of the road on my way there, and then the other side of the road on my way home. So much glass, plastic, and strings that can hurt our planet and the creatures living here. (PROCRASTINATION AT ITS FINEST!)

The other day I bought a coffee token at Scandic Café in Maroochydore, which will go to a person that might not be that fortunate to afford all the things that you and I might afford every day – a coffee.

So look around you. How can you give to someone else today? Or how can you help the environment? It might not be something big. A smile at that neighbor that you never see talking to anyone, clean out your closet and give to an op-shop. A person might only have a $50 bill to pay for their bus trip, and the bus driver won’t accept it. Is it possible that you can provide this person with $3 so that they can go on with their day like they planned?
There are so any ways we can help each other, and why not start today 🙂

Healing myself with everything I am given

When I was ten my mum decided to changed her life, even her name, and she started working as an energy therapist. This was 2001, an energy therapist. Come on, what is that? I can remember that she was called a ”hippie”, and this was apparently a bad thing.
Now I’m waaaay more hippie than my mum. She raised me well.
Talking to her now on Skype  and she’s saying that she’s not hippie anymore, and at the same time she’s showing me a dance on how to collect energy from mother earth… Yeah mum, you are always going to be a hippie. And I’m proud.

When talking about healthy habits people are often referring to eating healthy, doing physical activity. But looking at it from a holistic perspective – how do you heal your body, mind and spirit?
When you feel that you are not your best version of yourself, your body feels uncomfortable, your mind isn’t really that bright. What do you do?

I have a bad habit of seeing myself as a victim, which is not an attractive thing to do. And my mum, my role model, always makes me see this – which pisses me off (obviously), but she is right.

So I find things to heal myself – I’m that type of person that wears crystals ever day, I bathe with crystals. Heck, when I came home from the hospital after the accident I put all my crystals around my bed thinking they would protect and heal me. Is that weird? Not to me.
I see osteopaths for my body. I see crystal healers for all parts of me – body, mind, spirit. I’m reaching out to an astrologist because in a way it heals me knowing that there is a bigger picture to it that I can’t see right now, cause I’m right in the middle of it all and have a hard time seeing it from another perspective.

I practice meditation. I write. I do affirmations. I use essential oils for all parts of my body, even my vajayjay.
And now I’m gonna go cry a little, you know, cleanse the channels. Cause it’s good for me.

What do you do to heal your body, mind and spirit?

Changing bad habits

And now everyone thinks that I’m going to talk about nutrition.. But no. I’m going to talk about another bad habit of mine – my phone.

How many times a day do I check Facebook? How many times a day do I stalk people on Instagram?
I can say to myself ”Okay, I need to do this thing now. I’m just going to lie on my bed for a moment.” And instead of just lying there, breathing, getting re-energized – I pick up my phone. And Swooosh, half an hour has gone by. And it is mentally draining. It takes up more energy than it’s providing me with. It’s not really contributing anything to my current low mood.

I also don’t need to take my phone with me every time I need to do a poo, I just end up sitting there for a longer time. And there is more comfortable places to take a break than on the toilet.
Why do I do this? And I know that I am not the only one.

When it comes to bad habits, I am not that good at breaking them.
I don’t have many bad habits, but still. Or no, sorry – another bad habit. I’m living in deny.

How I’m trying to create a good relationship to my phone:

  • I hide the phone.
This is just an issue when a couple of hours has gone by and I can’t remember where I hid it. (Most of the time in my walk-in closet, and people that have seen my closet know much stuff I have. It looks like a war-zone once I’m done in there.)
  • I put it on silent. (Hence, why I’m most of the time not picking up.)
  • Sometimes I ask my roommates to take it from me. Does not happen very often, only on the occasions when I know it’s not good for me to text that one particular guy I’ve been stalking on Facebook for the last hour.
  • I turn it off one hour before bed.On that fourth point I lied again. At least I try to turn it off. Good intentions, that’s what counts, right?

If procrastination is about to happen maybe it should be done another way?
